HOW TO GROW SWEET POTATOES (part two)

Hi there gals and pals.

Big "grow your own food" lady here.

So today I'm going to show you how I prep my potatoes for planting.

NOTE : sweet potatoes take more love than just throwing a sprouted potato in the ground like regular spuds are capable of.

But I promise it's worth it.

STEP ONE : LABEL SOME GLASS JARS

First thing you need to do is rummage through your house and find some small jars.

Baby food jars work great. I used yogurt jars + some leftover spice jars. The spice jars worked quite nice because they were taller and could accommodate taller slips well.

Label the jars according to which type of potato you are pulling slips from. This is important so when you go to plant you know which potatoes you are planting.

But if you want a surprise, that's cool too. 😉

STEP TWO : FILL THE GLASSES WITH WATER

Thats it, its simple! 🤗

STEP THREE : TWIST THE SLIPS OFF THE POTATO + ADD TO JAR

This is super easy, but takes a bit of caution.

Here are some of my tips.

First of all, you want to remove the slip, not the leaves.

By that, I mean, you want to remove the slip (the green stem portion) from the skin of the potato.

If there are a lot of leaves down low, you can remove a few of them off the bottom of the slip so when you place them in the water they aren't submerged.

Notice slips are "stems" that hold leaves.

On the third slip, I would remove the bottom leaf

Make sure you are pinching at the base of the slip and twist carefully to remove.

Most come off fairly easy, but some may need a little bit of force.

Do your best to get the bulk of the "root end".

Then place the little buggers in water and let them do their thing and sprout roots.

This will take 2+ weeks to grow established roots.

I intend to plant mine between May 20 and June 1.

It may sound like a complicated process reading this, but I promise it is not.
